How do I become a Christian?

If you have read the page 'Becoming a Christian', you will know that this means taking a serious decision that you no longer want to live your life independently of God, you want to live in a close, personal relationship with Him. God doesn't expect you to become perfect overnight - in fact none of us will be perfect until the day that Jesus presents us to His Father. But we are expected to start being obedient to the teachings of Jesus, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

The first step is to acknowledge that you have been living your life independently of God.

The second step is to do an about-turn. This is called 'repentance'. You were walking in one direction and now you choose to walk in the opposite direction. You have been living independently of God, and now you choose to live in relationship with Him.

The third step is to recognise that you can only do this because Jesus has already done all that is necessary to make it possible for you to enter into a relationship with the one, Almighty God. When Jesus died on the cross, He broke the power of sin to cause endless spiritual death, and because He rose from the dead, we also can rise from our spiritual death. We can only come into relationship with God because of Jesus. There is no other way.

The fourth step is to commit to living your life for Jesus from now own, asking Him to give life to that spiritual part that has been dead. The Holy Spirit will then come a live in you, helping you to live the Christian life.

You might like to put this into action now with a prayer:

Almighty God, I realise that I have been living my life completely independently of you, and I realise now that that was not what you intended for me. I don't want to go on living independently of you, I want to have a relationship with you and I want to do things your way from now on. I'm sorry for all the years I've ignored you and gone my own way. I'm sorry for the mess I've made of my life. Thank you for making it possible for me to come into a relationship with you now, through the death of Jesus. I choose today to make a start on being a follower of Jesus. I want to hand the controls of my life over to you and to live life your way instead of my way. Please give life to my spirit by the power of your Holy Spirit coming to live in me.

If you have prayed that prayer - or something similar - you are now spiritually alive! Congratulations on your 'new birth'. With that comes a whole new family, the family of believers in Jesus, God's family. Today you have become a son or daughter of Almighty God.

You need to take your place in the family. You need to find the right church for you. It should be a church where you will be taught, and helped in your new life. If you live in Tavistock, we should be delighted to see you at Abbey Chapel. If you would like first to talk to someone from Abbey Chapel, please use the contact information on this website. If you don't live near us, then talk to a Christian friend about finding a suitable church.
