List of Gravestones now set back against the perimeter walls of Abbey Chapel

The list below is of the registered gravestones recovered from the churchyard and kindly passed on by Tavistock Historical Society. This list was assembled in 1989 by Jean Wans.

  3. 5  This stone is erected to the memory of MARY ANN daughter of WILLIAM and JOANNA BURLEY who resigned her breath to Almighty God the 16th day of September 1816 aged 25 years

  6. 8  Sacred to the memory of ELIZABETH daughter of RICHARD and ANN COLLING of this town who departed this life the 16th day of September 1808 aged 2 years and 2 months Also of WILLIAM son of the above who departed this life the 18th day of Novr 1811

9 This tablet was erected to the memory of JOHN COMMINS the Abbey Chapel congregation of which he was for more than sixty years a zealous member occasionally ministering in the absence of a settled pastor and shewing forth

the power of the blessed gospel in an earnest Christian life. Born 2nd Jan 1776 died 28th Oct 1825

11 Beneath lie the remains of ANN wife of RICHARD EASTLAKE of this town who died November 30th 1852 aged 55 years

Hark what is that note so mournful and slow That sounds on the wind the tidings of woe? That sounds like a knell a spirit is fled That tells us alas our mother is dead

12 Near this place are deposited the remains of GABRIEL EDGCOMBE of this town Gent who died the 6th day of Sep 1820 aged 77 years

28 The second grave opposite this stone lieth the body of ELIZABETH NEWTON who died Feb XXIVth MDCCXCVIII aged XCV years. She was the wife of the late JAMES NEWTON of

32 Here lieth the sleeping dust of RUTH the wife of HENRY PEARSE of the parish of Whitchurch Yeoman. She departed this life the 12th day of May 1795 aged 30 years
